Kikowaena - Hooping in Paradise

Kikowaena means "center of the circle" in Hawaiian. What an appropriate phrase to describe the beauty that hooping has brought into my life. We are building a movement and building a brand here in Honolulu, so hopefully you will start seeing more hooping on Oahu! This blog was made to promote our hooping, but also to spread beautiful photos and videos of other hoopers around the world.

The first is a painting by Meranda Anthofer that I immediately fell in love with. What’s not to love? Hoopnotica stole it for use on their instagram without giving her credit, and then officially apologized when the unity online hoop community had a huge uproar!

In light of this, I was hesitant to use this painting as inspiration for a tattoo. But I simply loved the concept of a silhouette and a mandala coming out from the hoop. I knew of a great local artist who does dot-shading mandala work, and my best friend took an amazing photo of me holding my hoop at sunset at an epic lovetribe Supermoon Makua campouts, creating a beautiful silhouette. When I brought this photo and a picture of the painting in to his shop, he created the most amazing interpretation of these two! It’s been 10 years since I last got a tattoo, so I was a little nervous, but I breathed deep, zen’d out to chill music, and went through a time warp, and it was done.

I couldn’t feel more blessed to wear this badge of honor on my body. What a great 5 year hoopiversary present to myself. It’s official. We’re a thing, I’m wearing it on me forever.

Not hooping related

I love this shot of Kiki, she’s illuminated by the poi by her hip. It’s such a simple shot, but I just love it. Zen Panda’s birthday party, Baldwin beach, Paia, Maui, Hawaii. Photo by Zen Panda

i-feel-ya-psychedelia: Apprentice hooper here. You are magical and you make my heart heavy with joy. I'm so glad you exist. That hooping poem was awesome and inspiring at the least. Thanks.

Tumblr won’t tell me when this was sent, but I’m sorry I didn’t see this sooner… Thank you! I love hearing kind words, and I can only hope I further inspire my fellow circle addicts, or help foster new ones.

Yeah, I’m reblogging myself. Because it’s just that good.

I’ve posted this quote before but just found it again recently. And whoa, it’s good.

..kikowaena.. Center of the circle

"The circle is perhaps the most ancient of mystical symbols and the most universal of all dances. It is the earth and the sun in eternal movement, an unbroken, unbent line symbolizing continuity and eternity. The circle dance represents wholeness. The dance brings life full circle.” - Iris J. Stewart, Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance
